Children's Therapy
We work from a Play Therapy perspective when working with children:
We are an ASD friendly practice.
Play based therapy is a counselling intervention used primarily with children. Where the therapist engages the power of play to communicate and elicit information in a nonthreatening or coercive way to assist children to disclose information freely in order for the therapist to able to gain information and apply other psychotherapeutic strategies to encourage positive change in the child's situation, behaviour or emotional state.
Play Therapy is often used as tool of diagnosis. A play therapist observes a client playing with toys (blocks, play dough, books, puppets) to assist in determining the cause of the disruptive behaviour and the level of the child's understanding of their emotions and circumstance.
Play therapy can be used as a self-help mechanism by the child client being able to participate freely in unstructured play. From a developmental point of view, play has been determined to be an essential component of healthy child development.
We have experience and skill in working with a range of play based tools including sensory and sand tray and symbol work.
When engaging with children, we ensure that it is age and stage appropriate and work from a developmental perspective.
